What chapter 9 covers

Ten Statistics questions with answers

Try each one, then open the answer. These ten stay the same; the test draws new ones every time.

1. A line of best fit passes through the points (10, 25) and (30, 65). Use it to estimate y when x = 20.

  1. A
    50
  2. B
    55
  3. C
    40
  4. D
    45
Show answer

Answer: D. The gradient is (65 − 25) ÷ (30 − 10) = 2, so from (10, 25) a rise of 10 in x adds 20: y = 25 + 20 = 45.

2. A cumulative frequency table for masses m kg shows: m ≤ 50: 5, m ≤ 60: 17, m ≤ 70: 39, m ≤ 80: 50. Which class contains the median?

  1. A
    50 < m ≤ 60
  2. B
    40 < m ≤ 50
  3. C
    60 < m ≤ 70
  4. D
    70 < m ≤ 80
Show answer

Answer: C. The median is the 25th value of 50. Up to 60 kg there are 17 values and up to 70 kg there are 39, so the 25th lies in 60 < m ≤ 70.

3. A pie chart shows how 720 students travel to school. The sector for cycling has an angle of 45°. How many students cycle?

  1. A
    45
  2. B
    90
  3. C
    180
  4. D
    80
Show answer

Answer: B. 45° out of 360° is 45/360 = 1/8 of the students: 720 ÷ 8 = 90.

4. A cumulative frequency curve for 160 plants gives heights of 18 cm at cumulative frequency 40, 24 cm at 80 and 31 cm at 120. Find the interquartile range.

  1. A
    13 cm
  2. B
    24 cm
  3. C
    6 cm
  4. D
    7 cm
Show answer

Answer: A. For 160 plants the quartiles are at 40 and 120, so IQR = 31 − 18 = 13 cm. 24 cm is the median.

5. A pie chart shows how 60 people travel to work. The bus sector represents 14 people. What is the angle of this sector?

  1. A
    14°
  2. B
    23.3°
  3. C
    84°
  4. D
    60°
Show answer

Answer: C. Each person is 360° ÷ 60 = 6°, so 14 people are 14 × 6 = 84°. 23.3 is the percentage, not the angle.

6. On a cumulative frequency curve for 200 exam marks, reading across from a cumulative frequency of 180 gives a mark of 72. What does 72 represent?

  1. A
    the upper quartile
  2. B
    the 90th percentile
  3. C
    the 180th percentile
  4. D
    the median
Show answer

Answer: B. 180 out of 200 is 90%, so 72 is the mark below which 90% of students scored: the 90th percentile. The upper quartile would be read at 150.

7. Heights h cm are to be grouped. Which set of groups is correct for continuous data?

  1. A
    150–160, 160–170, 170–180
  2. B
    150 < h ≤ 160, 160 < h ≤ 170, 170 < h ≤ 180
  3. C
    150 ≤ h ≤ 160, 160 ≤ h ≤ 170, 170 ≤ h ≤ 180
  4. D
    150 < h < 160, 160 < h < 170, 170 < h < 180
Show answer

Answer: B. Groups for continuous data must have no gaps and no overlaps. In the correct set 160 belongs only to the first group. Strict inequalities leave out 160 and 170; ≤ at both ends puts them in two groups.

8. In a histogram of masses, the class 60 < m ≤ 80 has frequency density 3.2 and the class 80 < m ≤ 90 has frequency density 5. Find the total frequency of these two classes.

  1. A
    64
  2. B
    50
  3. C
    8.2
  4. D
    114
Show answer

Answer: D. Frequencies: 3.2 × 20 = 64 and 5 × 10 = 50. Total = 114. Adding the frequency densities (8.2) is not a frequency.

9. Find the mean of 4, 7, 7, 9, 13.

  1. A
    7
  2. B
    8
  3. C
    9
  4. D
    40
Show answer

Answer: B. Mean = (4 + 7 + 7 + 9 + 13) ÷ 5 = 40 ÷ 5 = 8. The mode is 7 and the median is also 7; do not confuse them with the mean.

10. The masses m kg of 40 people are grouped: 40 < m ≤ 50 (frequency 8), 50 < m ≤ 60 (frequency 15), 60 < m ≤ 70 (frequency 11), 70 < m ≤ 80 (frequency 6). Which is the modal class?

  1. A
    40 < m ≤ 50
  2. B
    70 < m ≤ 80
  3. C
    50 < m ≤ 60
  4. D
    60 < m ≤ 70
Show answer

Answer: C. The modal class is the class with the highest frequency, which is 15 for 50 < m ≤ 60.
