The idea

Three men shaped the idea of Pakistan in different ways. Jinnah began in the Congress and worked for Hindu-Muslim unity, as in the Lucknow Pact of 1916. He left the Congress in 1920 because he opposed Gandhi's non-cooperation. After the Nehru Report and Congress rule he became convinced that Muslims needed their own state, built the League into a mass party and negotiated Pakistan with the British.

Allama Iqbal, the poet and thinker, was the first major leader to propose a Muslim state in the north-west, in 1930.

Rahmat Ali, a student at Cambridge, gave the idea a name in 1933.

Rules to remember

Common mistake

The usual mistake is to give Iqbal the credit for the name 'Pakistan'. Iqbal gave the idea of a north-western Muslim state in 1930; Rahmat Ali gave the name in 1933. Neither of these early schemes included Bengal.

Worked example

A writer proposes a Muslim homeland that includes Kashmir, has its own name, and must be completely separate from any Indian federation. Is this Iqbal in 1930 or Rahmat Ali in 1933?

  1. Iqbal named four areas (the Punjab, NWFP, Sindh, Balochistan) and gave the state no name.
  2. Rahmat Ali added Kashmir, the 'K' in his word 'Pakstan'.
  3. Rahmat Ali also rejected any federation with the rest of India.

Answer: Rahmat Ali, in 'Now or Never' (1933).
