The idea

Organic compounds are sorted into families called homologous series. Members of a series have the same functional group (the atom or group of atoms that decides the chemical properties), the same general formula and similar chemical properties. Each member differs from the next by a –CH2– unit, and physical properties such as boiling point show a trend.

The molecular formula gives only the numbers of atoms. The structural formula shows how the atoms are arranged, e.g. CH3CH2OH. The displayed formula shows every atom and every bond.

Structural isomers have the same molecular formula but different structural formulae. Saturated compounds have only single carbon–carbon bonds; unsaturated compounds have at least one carbon–carbon bond that is not single.

Rules to remember

Common mistake

In the carboxylic acid formula CnH2n+1COOH, n does not count the carbon atom of the COOH group. Ethanoic acid, CH3COOH, has n = 1 but two carbon atoms.

Worked example

Carboxylic acids have the general formula CnH2n+1COOH. For the acid with n = 2, find the structural formula, the molecular formula and Mr. (H 1, C 12, O 16)

  1. Put n = 2: C2H5COOH, which is CH3CH2COOH.
  2. Count the atoms: 3 C, 6 H and 2 O, so the molecular formula is C3H6O2.
  3. Mr = (3 × 12) + (6 × 1) + (2 × 16) = 36 + 6 + 32 = 74.

Answer: CH3CH2COOH (propanoic acid), molecular formula C3H6O2, Mr = 74.

Practice questions

Try each one, then open the answer.

1. How many covalent bonds are shown in the displayed formula of ethanol, CH3CH2OH?

  1. A
    6
  2. B
    7
  3. C
    8
  4. D
    9
Show answer

Answer: C. Five C–H bonds, one C–C bond, one C–O bond and one O–H bond: 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 8.

2. An alkane has 12 hydrogen atoms in each molecule. How many carbon atoms does it have?

  1. A
    4
  2. B
    5
  3. C
    6
  4. D
    12
Show answer

Answer: B. Alkanes fit CnH2n+2. If 2n + 2 = 12 then n = 5, so the molecule is C5H12 (pentane).

3. Which functional group is present in ethanoic acid?

  1. A
    –COO–
  2. B
    C=C
  3. C
    –NH2
  4. D
    –COOH
Show answer

Answer: D. Carboxylic acids contain the carboxyl group, –COOH. C=C is the alkene group, –COO– is the ester linkage found in esters, and –NH2 is the amine group.
