The idea

Mass is a measure of the quantity of matter in an object. It is measured in kilograms and it is the same everywhere. Mass also gives an object inertia: the larger the mass, the harder it is to start it moving, stop it or change its direction.

Weight is the force of gravity on an object. It is measured in newtons and it changes from place to place, because it depends on the gravitational field strength there. A gravitational field is a region where a mass feels a force due to gravitational attraction.

An electronic balance gives mass. A force meter (spring balance) measures weight. A beam balance compares two weights, and so two masses.

Rules to remember

Common mistake

Giving a weight in kilograms, or changing the mass when the object goes to another planet. Mass stays the same; only the weight changes.

Worked example

A toolbox weighs 49 N on Earth, where g = 9.8 N/kg. What does it weigh on a planet where g = 25 N/kg?

  1. Find the mass first: m = W ÷ g = 49 ÷ 9.8 = 5.0 kg
  2. The mass is the same on the other planet: 5.0 kg
  3. New weight: W = mg = 5.0 × 25 = 125 N

Answer: 125 N (the mass is still 5.0 kg).

Practice questions

Try each one, then open the answer.

1. Which statement about mass is correct?

  1. A
mass is the force of gravity on an object
  2. B
    mass is measured in newtons
  3. C
mass changes when an object is taken to the Moon
  4. D
mass is a measure of the quantity of matter in an object
Show answer

Answer: D. Mass is the amount of matter and is the same everywhere; it is measured in kilograms. Weight is the gravitational force and changes with g.

2. An object has a mass of 2.5 kg. What is its weight on Earth, where g = 10 N/kg?

  1. A
    0.25 N
  2. B
    2.5 N
  3. C
    25 N
  4. D
    250 N
Show answer

Answer: C. weight = mass × gravitational field strength = 2.5 × 10 = 25 N.

3. A heavy trolley is harder to start moving than a light one. Which property of the heavy trolley explains this?

  1. A
    its greater weight
  2. B
    its greater inertia
  3. C
    its greater density
  4. D
its greater friction with the ground
Show answer

Answer: B. Inertia is the resistance of a mass to a change in its motion. The larger the mass, the larger the inertia.
