The idea

Elements are sorted into metals and non-metals by their properties. Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity, are malleable (can be hammered into shape) and ductile (can be pulled into wires), and mostly have high melting and boiling points. Non-metals are usually poor conductors, are brittle when solid and mostly have low melting and boiling points.

Metals also share chemical reactions. Many react with dilute acids to give a salt and hydrogen. Reactive metals react with cold water to form a metal hydroxide and hydrogen; less reactive ones need steam and form a metal oxide and hydrogen. Metals react with oxygen to form metal oxides, most of which are basic.

Rules to remember

Common mistake

Writing that magnesium and steam give magnesium hydroxide. With steam the product is the oxide, MgO; a hydroxide forms only when a metal reacts with cold water.

Worked example

What mass of magnesium oxide is formed when 4.8 g of magnesium burns completely in oxygen? (O 16, Mg 24)

  1. Equation: 2Mg + O2 → 2MgO, so 1 mol of Mg gives 1 mol of MgO.
  2. Moles of Mg = 4.8 ÷ 24 = 0.20 mol, so moles of MgO = 0.20 mol.
  3. Mr of MgO = 24 + 16 = 40, so mass of MgO = 0.20 × 40 = 8.0 g.

Answer: 8.0 g of magnesium oxide.

Practice questions

Try each one, then open the answer.

1. Magnesium ribbon burns in air. What is the product and what type of oxide is it?

  1. A
    MgO, an acidic oxide
  2. B
    MgO, a basic oxide
  3. C
    MgO2, an amphoteric oxide
  4. D
    Mg(OH)2, a basic oxide
Show answer

Answer: B. 2Mg + O2 → 2MgO. Mg2+ and O2− give MgO; as a metal oxide it is basic.

2. Four metals, P, Q, R and S, are each added to the same dilute hydrochloric acid. The time taken to collect 20 cm3 of hydrogen is: P 15 s, Q 240 s, R 60 s. Metal S produces no gas. What is the order of reactivity, most reactive first?

  1. A
    P, R, Q, S
  2. B
    S, Q, R, P
  3. C
    P, Q, R, S
  4. D
    R, P, Q, S
Show answer

Answer: A. The more reactive the metal, the faster it produces hydrogen with the acid, so the shortest time is the most reactive: P (15 s), then R (60 s), then Q (240 s). S gives no gas, so it is the least reactive (below hydrogen).

3. Which set of properties most likely belongs to a metal?

  1. A
melting point −7 °C; liquid at room temperature; does not conduct
  2. B
melting point 113 °C; brittle solid; does not conduct in any state
  3. C
melting point 1455 °C; conducts when solid; malleable
  4. D
melting point 3550 °C; very hard; does not conduct when solid or molten
Show answer

Answer: C. Metals usually have high melting points, conduct electricity as solids and are malleable. The high-melting non-conductor is a giant covalent substance such as diamond.
