1. Find the equation of the tangent to y = x2 + 3x at x = 1.
- Ay = 5x + 4
- By = 2x + 2
- Cy = −⅕x + 4.2
- Dy = 5x − 1
Show answer
Answer: D. At x = 1, y = 4 and dy/dx = 2x + 3 = 5. y − 4 = 5(x − 1) gives y = 5x − 1. y = −⅕x + 4.2 is the normal.

Answer: D. At x = 1, y = 4 and dy/dx = 2x + 3 = 5. y − 4 = 5(x − 1) gives y = 5x − 1. y = −⅕x + 4.2 is the normal.
Answer: D. f(x) = x3 − 2x + C, and f(1) = 1 − 2 + C = 4 gives C = 5.
Answer: B. The derivative of sin x is cos x, so ∫cos x dx = sin x + C. The minus sign belongs to ∫sin x dx = −cos x + C.
Answer: B. y = e2x + C, and at x = 0, e0 = 1, so 1 + C = 5 and C = 4. Forgetting that e0 = 1 gives C = 5.
Answer: A. v = 5 cos t, and 5 cos(π/3) = 5 × ½ = 2.5 m s−1. 4.33 is the displacement, 5 sin(π/3).
Answer: C. ∫4x−3 dx = 4x−2/(−2) + C = −2/x2 + C. The power goes up from −3 to −2, not down.
Answer: A. f′(x) = 4x3 − 6x, then f″(x) = 12x2 − 6. 4x3 − 6x is only the first derivative.
Answer: D. f′(x) = 3x2 + k must never be negative. Its least value is k (at x = 0), so k ≥ 0.
Answer: B. f″ is the derivative of f′, so f″ > 0 means f′ is increasing (the graph of f is concave up). f itself may be decreasing.
Answer: A. Multiply by the power and reduce it by one: 12x2 − 10x. The derivative of the constant 7 is 0.
